How to find your purpose every day

New Age books used to predict the ‘great awakening’ and I reckon this could be it, because we all slowed down enough for a gap to appear. If you sense there is more to life than going back to the daily 9-5 grind and the old, overcommitted stressed-out lifestyle, you are part of the awakening. Subconscious information is coming to the surface and this means it’s time to let go of old habits and security and move towards your purpose. Resist the idea of ‘the new normal’, or ‘going back to normal’, we are not here to be normal! We are here to be extraordinary, and to be on a journey to discover our cosmic (true) selves. We each have a destiny, a purpose, a mission we signed up for.

Nothing exists without meaning. Deep in our hearts we all know this and if we don’t connect to purpose; physical emotional and even spiritual malfunctions occur on a very deep level. This sets off imbalances that, over time, surface as physical symptoms but no one makes the connection to the primary cause. Most clients tell me that they don’t know what their purpose is. Well, no one really knows, you can only ‘see’ it when you do it. It’s like one of those exercise bikes that don’t show data until you start pedalling.

To get pedalling, follow the natural daily rhythm, the 24 hour cycle of chi. In TCM our organs (I’m talking chi organs here) take their instructions from what we call the ‘Dao’, you could say this is the universal intelligence, aligning with the daily rhythm hooks up our organs to the source. All your organs help guide you towards purpose, but it is the job of your heart aka ‘the Emperor’ to make you consciously aware of your purpose. Your heart governs blood; the elixir of life. Blood is loaded with information that goes way beyond what shows up in a western medicine blood test.

The information about your purpose (ancient Taoists referred to this as your ‘contract with Heaven’) is encrypted in your blood and it requires a specific sequence of daily activities to decode. Start with exercise each day and your organs start unlocking the code. Keep following the daily decoder sequence and the natural rhythm of yin and yang, you will get a drip-feed of information that steadily takes you closer to destiny. But live randomly, the data disappears and we become confused about life, seek other people’s advice, lose touch with our true selves, feel vulnerable, weak and in pain, and symptoms escalate. The secret is to just keep going, follow the chi cycle, trust life, and make dreams a reality.

The path to purpose always means change, and with change of course comes fear and fear can paralyse us. If we can’t move we get stuck in overthinking, we feel bad and then our thoughts turn negative and we don’t act. The solution: chi! Get chi moving and you immediately feel good, and if you feel good your thoughts are positive. You see new possibilities. When chi flows your options grow. The chi-cycle lifestyle is all about keeping chi flowing 24/7. Living for purpose is challenging, just because you are on the right track doesn’t mean it’s going to be easy, and I reckon adding a chi practice (tai chi, or yoga) is essential because it also builds your inner strength, motivation and commitment.

In the cosmology of traditional Chinese medicine there are cycles within cycles, and our organs are like small cogs in a much bigger clockworks. There is a big picture plan which is that together we create a harmonious planet. This is regulated by the Dao. The more you align with the natural rhythms of the chi-cycle and your organs, the more you tap into your role in global harmony and everyone’s purpose is connected to this. So, if you want to know your purpose ask yourself: does it feel ‘right’, and does it serve the greater good? Then instead of doing a job to live, live so you can do your job. The earth is waiting….
